From an early age I always found myself pushing to be as good as I could be, never satisfied with where I was.  I was considered one of the hardest workers everywhere I went, but what I didn't appreciate at the time was how much of that was driven by a fear of failure.  I thought if I just worked a little harder that's all it would take to finally achieve my next goal.  Often moments away from burnout, sometimes completely ingulfed in it, I still managed to achieve every goal but never felt satisfied and consistently my own worst enemy.  I've worked with countless mental performance coaches, both within the Special Operations community and top NCAA D1 programs and while I was taught many techniques for handling stressful situations, a couple things became very clear.

First, there was a disconnect between what was taught by performance psych's and practical application.  The context and subtle nuance differences of learning techniques in a classroom and applying them in the most stressful situations was being missed.

Second, that most of these techniques, while useful in the moment, were not addressing the root cause for why many people struggle to "get out of your own way," or with "burnout" or "over-reacting" to mistakes.

 

I've learned these lessons the hard way, hitting rock bottom before finally finding a mentor that taught me how to truly become self-aware, how to accept, and how to be grateful for even the worst moments.
